4 Method Steps
-
Preheat oven to 200°C/180°C fan-forced. Heat oil (1 tbsp olive oil) in a non-stick frying pan over medium-high heat. Cook mince (900g Coles 5 Star Extra Lean Beef Mince) in 2 batches, stirring with a wooden spoon to break up mince, for 8 to 10 minutes or until browned. Transfer to a bowl. Add onion (1 large brown onion, chopped) and garlic (3 garlic cloves, crushed) to pan. Cook, stirring, for 3 minutes or until softened.
-
Return mince to pan. Add gravy powder (1/4 cup instant gravy powder). Cook, stirring, for 1 minute. Stir in stock (1 cup Massel beef stock) and tomato (Mutti Polpa Finely Chopped Tomatoes 400g). Bring to the boil. Reduce heat to medium-low. Simmer, stirring occasionally, for 25 to 30 minutes or until thickened.
-
Meanwhile, cook potato (1.2kg sebago potatoes, peeled, chopped) in a saucepan of boiling, salted water for 10 to 12 minutes or until tender. Drain. Return to pan over low heat. Mash until smooth. Add butter (50g butter, chopped) and milk (1/2 cup milk). Stir until butter has melted and mixture is combined.
-
Spoon mince mixture into a 1.4 litre casserole dish. Top with potato mixture. Sprinkle with cheese (1/4 cup grated Devondale Tasty Cheese Block (500g)). Bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until golden. Serve.

Recipe Notes
What is the difference between a shepherd's pie and a cottage pie?
Many often get confused between cottage pie and shepherd’s pie, and we don’t blame them. Both have mince underneath and potato on top. The difference is that shepherd’s pie contains lamb, and “cottage” usually applies to one made with beef mince.
Where is cottage pie originally from?
Although there is talk about cottage pie originating from France, it was invented in the United Kingdom (alongside its lamb-y sibling, shepherd’s pie). It is thought to have been first eaten in the 1800s, making the cottage pie over 200 years old!
Why is my cottage pie runny?
If your cottage pie is too runny, it might be because it has not been simmered for long enough. The longer it cooks over the stove, the more gravy-like the sauce gets, so keep an eye on your mince mixture to make sure it’s thick enough for your liking. If you choose to add vegetables to yours, bear in mind that they will release water so it will need simmering for a little longer.
How long will cottage pie last in the fridge?
If you’re storing leftover cottage pie in the fridge, we recommend not leaving it for more than 3 days. However, you can store it in the freezer for up to 3 months, making it perfect for prep-ahead dinners.
