The Whole Family Will Love This Keto Marinara Sauce!

Last Updated: 3 Oct 2019

One of the hardest things about being on a low carb or keto diet is having to cook one meal for myself and another for my kids.

I try to avoid this as much as possible and find a special joy when I create basic recipes - like this Keto Marinara - that the whole family will love.

I know a lot of people resist the idea of making things that they can easily buy, and I get it.

But I promise - this is so simple to throw together on the weekend, and it tastes A-MA-ZING!

This recipe makes a chunky marinara sauce. If you want it smoother, process it in the blender until it reaches the desired consistency. (This is what I often do - that way the kids can use it for pizza and meatballs.)

I've used this to make Keto Manicotti (coming soon), and I must say it was out of this world.

FAQs

Can I substitute crushed tomatoes for tomato sauce? ›

Substitute Canned Tomatoes

If the resulting purée seems wetter than a typical tomato sauce, just drain off some of the excess liquid, or cook the mixture down until you reach the desired consistency. If using crushed tomatoes, cook down until it thickens a bit.

How to can marinara sauce without a pressure cooker? ›

Using a large ladle, transfer the hot tomato sauce into the jars, leaving 1/2 inch headspace between the top of the sauce and the rim of the jar. Wipe the rims with a clean kitchen towel, add lids and rings, and process in a boiling water bath for 40 minutes. For smaller jars, reduce the processing time by 5 minutes.

What can I use instead of tomato paste to thicken? ›

For every 1 tablespoon of tomato paste needed, use 3 tablespoons of tomato puree or sauce. Add the puree or sauce in place of the tomato paste and cook, stirring constantly, until the puree or sauce has reduced and thickened. You'll have a similar deep, savory flavor.

Can I use crushed tomatoes instead of paste? ›

A can of diced or stewed tomatoes works well as a tomato paste substitute when you want tomato flavor with a touch of thickening power. Because these products are typically packed in a lot of liquid, you'll want to strain out the juice and only use the solids.

Do sauces reduce in a pressure cooker? ›

Remember, liquids don't really reduce in a pressure cooker, which means that the final flavor of a pressure-cooked sauce is not quite the same as that of an oven-cooked sauce. But, unless you're doing a direct, side-by-side comparison, it's not something you or your dinner companions are likely to notice.

Does pressure cooking thicken sauce? ›

Moisture is retained during pressure cooking which means sauces don't thicken. You can thicken afterwards by leaving your pressure cooker on the heat once the lid is removed and reducing. A mixture of cornflour and water added at this point will help it along.

Do you have to add lemon juice to tomato sauce when pressure canning? ›

The short answer to the question is “Yes, to ensure safety, acid in the form of lemon juice, citric acid or vinegar must be added to tomatoes that will be processed by a pressure canning option”.

Can I replace canned tomatoes with tomato sauce? ›

Canned tomatoes can easily be replaced with passata, storebought pasta sauce or even tomato paste thinned with a little water.

Can you use crushed tomatoes in chili instead of tomato sauce? ›

When making ground beef chili, you can substitute crushed tomatoes with tomato sauce as long as you keep the same texture, taste, and flavor before you end up cooking your beef chili to balance food presentation. Of course, I do.

What is the difference between crushed and pureed tomatoes for sauce? ›

Because of this, it's generally better to avoid crushed products, opting instead to crush your own whole tomatoes. Tomato Purée is a cooked and strained tomato product. It makes a good shortcut for quick-cooking sauces, but your sauce will lack the complexity you get from slowly reducing less-processed tomatoes.
