Some vehicles have external slave cylinders, these can be changed without removing the transmission. Other vehicles use internal slave cylinders, these require the transmission to be removed to replace the slave cylinder. If your car uses an external slave, I WOULDN'T replace the clutch unless you know it's bad.
A spongy, loose-feeling clutch pedal that sinks to the floor, is slow to reset, or is difficult to push down may mean your clutch slave cylinder has a problem. If there's a problem with the slave cylinder, it won't push hard enough to re-engage the clutch.
A bad slave would go straight to the floor or require several pumps to get good clutch action. A bad master would leave you stuck in a gear ( or neutral) and have fluid leaking down the clutch pedal arm.
Short answer: yes. The clutch cylinder on my Civic failed, thankfully while getting the car serviced at the Honda service Center. The clutch pedal sank while changing the fluid and bleeding the clutch. There was no leakage.
A certified mechanic can replace your clutch slave cylinder in about 1.15 hours. They will first inspect the master cylinder and slave cylinder, check the brake fluid, and inspect the clutch pedal function before replacing any malfunctioning parts, if necessary.
If there is air in the system, you do not get enough pressure and the clutch is not able to fully engage. Bleeding the clutch is a process in which you remove all the fluid currently in the system, getting out all the liquid and air, and replacing it with purely liquid.
The master cylinder reserves brake fluid that flows into the slave cylinder. This provides the pressure required to engage the clutch. If a fault compromises the functionality of the clutch master cylinder, there will be lowered pressure from the brake fluid to engage with the clutch.
Soft/Sinking Clutch Pedal. While not directly related to the clutch disc, a spongy feeling clutch pedal is a sign your transmission needs to be serviced. ...
This can result in a clutch pedal that won't move, which makes the vehicle inoperable. In this 29-minute free webinar, you will learn the five most common causes of slave cylinder leaks and how to avoid them.
You're okay to drive whatever short distance, make sure you clean up the fluid that leaked inside like @Paulster said. In theory, you only need the clutch to start from a complete stop, if you're pretty good at driving a manual, you can minimize the use of clutch on this trip matching revs.
